Lessons Learned from The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill Podcast

Like many of you, I’ve listened to every episode of the “Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” podcast.

I shake my head and weep at the abuses and the testimonies of those who were hurt by so many bad choices, outright corruption, and sin.

As a two-time church planter, it got me thinking.  What would a podcast be like if you interviewed every one who has ever been mad at me as a pastor?

It would be pretty ugly.

My comfort is that I am thankful for the accountability and mentorship I had along the way.  Without it, I would be left to blame for every mistake along the way.  No doubt, my mistakes were my own, but I did have people helping me make decisions and cast vision during those years.  My coaches and my mentors helped me.  Sometimes I did well.  Sometimes, I failed.

I loved my elders and deacons, but the accountability I had outside the church was so helpful…especially when it came to needed objectivity.

My encouragement to you?

Seek a mentor who has done what you do.

Invest in a coach.

Seek counsel from outside your church.

Just don’t go it alone.
